We have grown! and are now able to include a Tuesday morning optional Sitting in Silence Practice to support those who miss a Thursday evening within a series or to add an optional additional sitting practice to your schedule.

Tuesday Practice Form

Please arrive early to settle and begin on time. The practice room is a silent room. At 6:30 a.m. the doors to the practice room will close and bells will ring to enter silence (please do not enter the room if the door has closed). Choose a cushion when you enter the room, extend a simple bow to the cushion that will hold you, then turn to bow to the community that supports practice together.

This series will welcome new and returning participants; building the foundation of practice, expanding knowledge and experience with beginner's mind, and supporting community practice together.

What is Zen?

Zen is the practice of coming back to the actual right-now-in-this-moment self, coming back to the naturalness, the intimacy and simplicity of our true nature. Zen practice is not about getting away from our life as it is; it is about getting into our life as it is, with all of its vividness, beauty, hardship, joy and sorrow. Zen is a path of awakening: awakening to who we really are, and awakening the aspiration to connect and serve others and take responsibility for all of life.

This program is for people who are:
o Ready to commit to a daily meditation practice.
o Who have some experience but need support to sit on their cushion each day.
o Preparing to explore silent retreat in the future.
o Who wish to practice in the company of others.
o Who have never tried to meditate at all and are seriously curious.

These sessions will explore:

• Original Self,
• Daily Practice,
• Overview of guiding ethics,
• Sitting With Others,
• Integrating Meditation into everyday life regardless of personal faith.
• Includes supporting practice resource guide and weekly reading.

Melissa Berry Appleton has been a student of yoga for 18 years. She received yoga teacher training from senior Ashtanga, Iyengar, Anusara, Restorative and Trauma-Informed Yoga Teachers. She received Meditation Teacher Training and Certification from Michael Stone with whom she studied for 14 years and built programs with for five years. She currently practices with Michael Stone in heart, Norman Fischer (Everyday Zen), and is a part of the Upaya Zen Centre Buddhist Chaplaincy Training under Roshi Joan Halifax. The Yoga & Meditation Gentle Zen Form Series invites you to join us for Tuesday Morning Sitting In Silence Practice.

Please arrive early to register your name, settle and begin on time. The practice room is a silent room. At 6:30 a.m. the doors to the practice room will close and bells will ring to enter silence (please do not enter the room if the door has closed). Please leave all water, tea, bags, phones and personal items outside of the room.

Upon stepping into the room, place your palms together and provide a simple bow.
Choose a cushion for sitting when you enter the room, extend a simple bow to the cushion that will hold you -
Turn to bow to the community that supports practice together.
Take a seat and let your body move and shift in your seat until you find comfort and then settle.

*There will not be any guided meditation or instruction for this practice (Guidance and Education is provided on Thursday Evenings but not necessary to attend). Please stay for the full practice. If you require help to find comfortable seating and supports please arrive 20 minutes early the first day you attend. If you are a little nervous about attending your first time - come early - it will be great to meet you and help get you settled. Please wear loose comfortable clothing. Benches, chairs and all cushions provided.

The 4 week beginner's series will take you step by step through this unique practice and give you a better understanding of the practice itself as well as a deeper connection to who you are and how you live your life.

What a joy it has been to meet with dedicate yogis to explore the beautiful depths of intermediate yoga postures.
 
We will continue our practices with the first series of 2018: exploring back bending. As this can be a challenging movement direction for many of us, we will break down some of the ways to move safely into this wonderful, heart-opening expression so that we can be and stay present to the experience.
 
This will be supported by connection to the breath, and living in the moment with a quiet and concentrated mind.
 
We might work occasionally in partners, having the support to move in with confidence and a sense of safety.
 
We will start with easier poses, and then, as we feel more open and courageous, move to an intermediate level of practice.
 
This series will explore some of the deeper dimensions of the Hatha yoga practice using mindfulness within movement patterns to rest into a profound state of one pointed concentration (dharana) - cultivating witness consciousness.

We will begin by laying the foundations for coming into and releasing physical postures with safety and integrity. As the weeks pass, we will build and deepen, focusing on a flow of postures that will feature the movement direction we are exploring. How do we find and sustain the nectar in our physical practice without creating straining or striving? Though the poses will be a bit more challenging, and we might hold a little longer, the focus will be on practicing with ease, deep breath, and buoyancy--that lightness that brings us back again and again to the mat.

The body loves to work and hold, and is energized and restored in this way (though sometimes, the mind might say otherwise *:) happy). While we honour our limits and always maintain safety, holding a posture that is well-aligned allows us to move our focus to the mind and the constant fluctuations. We learn to settle into the space behind the mind.

This class is appropriate for individuals with at least 1 year of experience practicing yoga, who want to move towards a stronger moderate practice.

4 Week Beginner Yoga Series

This series is both for people who have never tried yoga and those that have tried it out and felt lost in regular classes.
 
We will explore the basics of hatha yoga, including, but not limited to breath work, physical postures and simple meditation. The development of proper and safe alignment, a felt experience of the full breath and self-observation without judgement will be emphasized. We will also explore modifications and variations on yoga poses that are regularly practiced in studio classes how to safely perform a Sun Salute!
 
Through this series you will gain or strengthen your mind-body connection and learn valuable tools for reducing stress and building strength and flexibility. 
 
The intention for this series is for you to be able to attend regularly scheduled classes with confidence, so please come equipped with all of the questions that you may have!

Radiant Grace: A Kundalini Yoga Series for Women

In this six week series, we will use the tools of Kundalini Yoga to connect and reconnect as women with our intuition, radiance, each other and our Sat Nam (True) selves.
 
Through this union of body, breath, mind, spirit and awareness, you will be invited to let go of the fear that is holding you back from living a life of purpose on your dharmic path to move gracefully (whatever that looks like for you!) into the radiance of a passion driven lifetime.
 
Together, we will learn to feel the movement of energy in our bod(ies) in order to strengthen our connectivity to intuition, passion, purpose, dharma and Self.
 
This class is open and accessible to all levels of practitioners. Please expect breathwork, mantra, movement, meditation and friendship.
